Wyatt Observed In 'Who's Who In The West' Willard Wyatt, Sn Coun- ty Commissioner and former news- paperman, has made the seventh edRion of the Marquis publication of "Who's Who in the West", it was announced  week. Wat's public accomplishments and community services were the basis for his selection. Asked how the selection came about, Wyatt explained that 10,000 persons were i_ntervwed in the 13 western states. ULtin'mtely "Who's Who in e West" screened that number down to 15 individuals whose accomplishments merit no- tices in volume seven of the pub- lieation. ' Wyatt's newspaper car0er start- ed wifh the Clarkston Republic, Idaho, newspaper in 1917 and early '18. Tbe latter par of 1918 he served in the United States Army. Upon discharge he became a staf- fer on the Lewiston Morning Tri- bune, Iso Ido, where he remain- ed for 20 years. During World War II he did special investigative work in con- nection with the Japanese concen- tration camp at Puyaliup here in Washington State. AssLurdng ownership of The Mon- roe Monitor, Wyatt was the pub- lisher of th2s valey's newspaper from 1942 to 1947. During that time the Monitor was recognized as one of the outstanding community builders in e state. During his tenure s ,publisher he was elected regional director of the National Editorial Assn. Today Wyatt serves as a mem- ber of e three-man board of Sno- hnish Couy Comnissioners-a post he has held since 1947. Gary Johnson, with 13 points, was ldgh poi man for the Mon- roeites while Cle Eum's Chtarles Iloss did his share by garnering 29 points. Monroe Shopping Center PYramid 4-6111 An Important Message to Our Subscribers and to Our Employees from the West Coast Telephone Company The union member employees of the West Coast Telephone Company have gone on strike against the Company in spite of what we sincerely believe to be completely fair wage offers made to them. We find this action difficult to understand, especially in view of current economic conditions in the Pacific Northwest. We repeat our willingness to continue negotiations, but we would like to present the following facts to our subscribers. 1. West Coast Telephone Company employees receive fair wages Wages received by our employeescompare fairly with wages paid throughout the telephone in- dustry, particularly for dries of comparable size. Union statements have distorted these facts by comparing West Coast scales before our offered increases with other scales which include increases this year. They also have compared West Coast wage scales with those of much larger metropoli- tan areas. These do not make the fairness of West Coast scales or offered' increases any less of a fact. West Coast employees have received FIFTEEN wage increases during the past 15 years! 2. West Coast Telephone has negotiated in good faith The Company's negotiating Committee has met with the union's negotiating committee since October 17th. We have given serious consideration to every demand presented to us. We sincerely . believe that the offers we have made meet all tests of fairness both within the telephone industry and for other industries in our service area. 3. We offered the union the complete Pacific Telephone- Northwest contract News releases and advertisements published by the union have made much about Pacific Telephone-Northwest pay scales. WE HAVE OFFERED TO OUR EMPLOYEES THIS COMPLETE CONTRACT -- lock, stock and bar- rel! We have offered the identical wage scales and the identical "fringe" benefits contained in the contract approved this year by the Communica- tion Workers of America and Pacific Telephone- Northwest. However, we made it clear that this would be the same contract, which does hot include the advantageous vacation, pension and certain other provisions currently enjoyed by West Coast Telephone employees. The union has used Pacific Telephone-Northwest wage scales for publicity purposes, but it REJECTED the Com- - party's bona-fide offer of the identical contract! " 4. This proposai offered wage increases of more than 6% over a two-year period. These'wage increases range from 11c per hour to 19c per hour for the two years. These increases are in line with both telephone and general industry contracts approved . by other unions this year. . The union refused to submit either offer to its membership The above two alternate proposals were submitted to the union's negotiating committee on December 13th and December 14th. The union not only rejected them but it also refused to even submit them to the union membership for their individual consideration and vote. 6. Our employees enjoy outstanding vacation, pension and other benefits It seems to us that the union wants to 'ave its cake and eat it too." Our employees now enjoy many benefits not enjoyed by other telephone company employees or workers in other industries. They are not willing to give up these benefits, and for this we do not blame them, but neither are they willing to accelSt a fair wage increase which allows these benefits to continue. 7, We have responsibilities to our employees and also to our customers We recognize our responsibility to pay our em- pl0yees fairly, to provide good working conditions and to provide as many additional benefits as are possible. But we have an equal responsibility to our subscribers. We have the responsibility to provide the finest possible telephone service at fair and equitable rates. If we submit to what we believe are unfair wage demands, we will have no course but to ask for higher telephone rates, We believe that the wage proposals we are offering to our employees meet all standards of fairness  both our em- ployees and to our subscribers. 8.
