June 21a !973 COAST GUARD Academy graduate Miles Millbach, left, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Millbach of Monroe, received his com- mission from Secretary of Transportation Claude Brinegar during ceremonies at the academy in New I_ondon, Connecticut. Ensign Millbach Graduates From Coast Guard Academy Ensign Miles Millbach of Monroe began his career as a Coast Guard officer when he receiv- ed his commission during graduation ceremonies at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut recently. He was also awarded a bachelor of science degree during the commencement at which Sec- retary of Transportation Claude S. Brinegar was the featured speaker. The new ensign is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph F. Mlllbach, 300 Powell Street. He is a graduate of Monroe High School. After a short leave he will report to Coast Guard Buoy Tender Fir which is homeported in Seattle. The day before graduation, Mlllbach was pre- sented the Newcomen Society in North America - Thomas Newcomen Memorial Award for achiev- ing the highest proficiency in his class in Physics. While at the Academy the young ensign studied ihysical and ocean sciences as well as several beral arts subjects. During the summers he was engaged in practical training programs which included flight training, cruises on Coast Guard cutters and short voyages on the Academy's 295-foot square-rigged sailing ship "Eagle." Light Horse Judg- ing School held in Yakima recently. Brenda Gatzke earn- ed second place honors while Jennifer Lemke and Valrie Gatzke scored 9 and 10. Other members at- tending were: Lisa Picklesimer, Connie King, Katie King and Jantce Lemke. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Lemke and Mr. and Mrs. ClarenceGatzke served as chaperones. The youngsters held several fund raising projects to earn money to attend the two day school. Beef Barbecue To Be Here A beef barbecue of- fering 1,300 pounds of beef roasted over al- der coals is set for June 24 at the Ever- green State Fair- grounds. The eighth annual affair, sponsored by the Snohomish County Kidney Foundation, is a benefit for the Northwest Kidney Center to raise money for life-giving care for kidney patients. Serving begins at noon and ends at 6 p.m. Cost is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children 6-12. Child- ren under six years old may eat free. MONITOR advertls- tng separates fact from fiction.
