To get such an organization off and pushing, a second meeting is scheduled for noon, Wednesday, February 2, at the Dutch Cup Cafe in Sultan. All businessmen and chambers of commerce in the east end of the county as well as those in the affected area of King County are urged to attend the no-host affair. Last week's meeting, arranged by Bruce Kehr, president of Sno-Coun- try, the Stevens Pass ski area, was held for two reasons-- that of tour- ist promotion and also to discuss a better way to keep people in- formed on road and pass conditions. Although Kehr was unable to attend because of road closures, his spoke- sman, Bill Robertson of Skykomish, said Kehr suggested better coor- dination between the ski areas, For- est Service and State Highway De- partment in issuing and updating road reports. The reports and avalanche warn- ings are issued by the Forest Ser- vice and as conditions warrant, road closures are enforced by the state patrol. It was suggested that better communication would allow road closures and openings more con- sistent with actual conditions and provide better service for the pub- lic. Lamenting about one recent week- end in particular, Robertson said an avalanche warning, not unfounded, went out before the weekend. "But the weather remained stable until Sunday afternoon," Robertson said "and no word was released to contradict the idea that people shouldn't travel to the pass or ski Friday and Saturday. The road, in fact was like a boulevard. We're not blaming anyone. We just think there must be a better way." On the road itself, all those present thought Highway 2 wasn't getting its share of highway money. Paul Williams of Skykomish put it: "They haven't done a darned thing to Highway 2 since the road was built in the early thirties." The group also hoped for better promotion of the scenic qualities of Highway 2. Some wanted the new "association" to involve the area from the pass to Monroe, others from the pass to Everett, and stUl others were concerned with pro- motion of the whole Cascade Moun- tain area. Also sugl~ested was annexation. In Snohomish County that part ox rdng which lies east of Baring to the PROMOTION of Highway 2 to Stevens Pass for the benefit of all business people in the Skykomish Valley is the topic of conversaLion here for three of those attending a meeting in Sultan last week.
